On the evening of July 24th, before the full council meeting, members of our group—Janet, Carole, and Rob—had the opportunity to present to the district councillors. They shared the vital work our volunteers undertake every Saturday morning at the old Folkestone cemetery. Among the many tasks we perform are researching local history, assisting families in locating their ancestral graves, cutting back brambles and weeds, and maintaining the White Garden, a tranquil space dedicated to the memory of stillborn babies.
During the presentation, which included information about wildflowers and wildlife, we also highlighted the significance of the Commonwealth War Graves, Victoria Cross recipients, the Grosser Kurfurst memorial, and the Machine Gun Corps memorial. We mentioned several notable individuals, including civic leaders, who are interred in the cemetery. Our presentation, lasting approximately 45 minutes, concluded with an invitation for the councillors to visit on any Saturday morning, where we would be pleased to give them a tour of this historically rich and fascinating site.
