As is customary each year on Armistice Day (11 November), veterans and their families, representatives from the office of the Lord Lieutenant, Folkestone & Hythe District Council, Folkestone Town Council, the local police force, cadets from the Army and Navy, local schools, residents, and members of the Friends volunteer groups gathered around the Machine Gun Corps Memorial to pay tribute to those who have given their lives for their country in wars past and present.
Unlike yesterday’s continual rain, the weather remained dry, though a strong, cold wind swept across the gathering. Despite the blustery conditions, the service was dignified and heartfelt, with wreaths laid in remembrance and a moment of silence observed to honour the fallen.
This old cemetery contains 45 Commonwealth War Graves and 3 Victoria Cross recipients, as well as many military officers and men. Earlier in the week, Friends volunteers had placed a poppy on each of the CWGs and VCs. Today, a poppy sheaf was also placed on the Cross of Sacrifice.
